Where to open a bakery in Chennai
A walk-in bakery sells to the neighbourhood every day: bread and snacks in the morning, cakes for occasions, and tea-time items in the evening.

Before you sign
What to check on the ground
- 1Watch the nearest bakeries between 5–8 pm, when most snack and cake sales happen.
- 2Compare prices for a standard cake, a puff and a loaf of bread.
- 3Confirm the space allows ovens: power load, ventilation and fire safety.
- 4Check the FSSAI registration needed for a production kitchen on site.
- 5Look for space to display cakes where passers-by can see them.
The honest part
Common location mistakes
- ×A wide menu from day one, which means waste until you know what sells.
- ×No plan for cake orders by phone or delivery apps.
- ×Underestimating the electricity bill for ovens and chillers.
Questions
Asked often
- Can I start from home before opening a shop?
- Many do. A home bakery tests what sells and builds regulars before you pay shop rent. See the home bakery cost page for what that takes.
- What do you mean by an "area"?
- We split Chennai into small hexagons of about 0.7 km² each. An area's picture counts what's within the reach shown for that business, not only inside the hexagon. It's an area to look in, not an address: the exact spot still needs a visit.
- Where does your data come from?
- Businesses from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps, and residents from WorldPop (2020). Map data always misses some businesses, so every count is "at least". The paid report adds a live look at the listings Google shows today.
- Does this tell me the rent?
- No. Rent, frontage and parking need a visit. That's why every guide ends with what to check on the ground.
