Chennai location guides / restaurant
Where to open a restaurant in Chennai
Restaurants draw from further away than most shops: people travel for a meal they like, and delivery apps extend the reach even more. What matters is how many potential diners are within reach, and how many places already serve them.

Many restaurants per resident nearby compared with other Chennai areas where restaurants are mapped (at least 337 within approximately 2.4 km; daytime visitors not counted).
How solid our data is: Medium (population data from 2020). Ranked on demand, adjusted for the competitors in our map data. This is an area to look in, not an address.

Reach
How far people come for a restaurant
We use the widest reach for restaurants, about 2.4 km, because people travel for food and delivery covers a wider circle than walk-in trade.
In our map: about 2.4 km, counted in map hexagons around each area. That's an approximation, not a walking or driving distance.

Before you sign
What to check on the ground
- 1Eat at the three busiest places nearby at peak time: how long is the wait?
- 2Check which cuisines are missing nearby, not just how many restaurants exist.
- 3Confirm the licences for the exact premises (FSSAI, fire NOC, trade licence, and a liquor licence if planned).
- 4Check exhaust, gas and drainage, and whether the building's other tenants will object.
- 5If you plan to deliver, check the space works as a delivery-first kitchen too.
The honest part
Common location mistakes
- ×Spending on interiors before the menu is proven.
- ×A location that works for dinner but not lunch, or the reverse.
- ×Forgetting the commission on delivery orders when setting prices.
Questions
Asked often
- Should I start with a cloud kitchen instead?
- A delivery-only kitchen costs far less to set up and tests the menu. It needs a different location: cheap rent close to where orders come from, not a busy street. See the cloud kitchen cost page.
- What do you mean by an "area"?
- We split Chennai into small hexagons of about 0.7 km² each. An area's picture counts what's within the reach shown for that business, not only inside the hexagon. It's an area to look in, not an address: the exact spot still needs a visit.
- Where does your data come from?
- Businesses from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps, and residents from WorldPop (2020). Map data always misses some businesses, so every count is "at least". The paid report adds a live look at the listings Google shows today.
- Does this tell me the rent?
- No. Rent, frontage and parking need a visit. That's why every guide ends with what to check on the ground.
