Where to open a salon in Chennai
Salon customers come back every few weeks, so a salon is built on regulars who live or work nearby and find it easy to drop in.

How far people come for a salon
We look about 1.6 km around each area: close enough to be convenient for a regular appointment, far enough to include the next neighbourhood.
In our map: about 1.6 km, counted in map hexagons around each area. That's an approximation, not a walking or driving distance.

Before you sign
What to check on the ground
- 1Visit the nearest salons on a Saturday afternoon: are customers waiting?
- 2Note their price lists for the five most common services.
- 3Check water supply and drainage for wash stations, and the power load for dryers and AC.
- 4See whether the space can be split for a separate women's section, if you plan one.
- 5Ask whether signage is allowed on the front of the building.
The honest part
Common location mistakes
- ×Choosing a space that's hard to find on the first visit.
- ×Relying on one star stylist who can leave with the clientele.
- ×Opening with too many chairs before the regulars build up.
Questions
Asked often
- Men's, women's or unisex — does the area decide?
- Partly. Look at who already serves the area and who is missing. Our map shows how many salons there are in total, not which kind, so this is one of the things to check on the ground.
- What do you mean by an "area"?
- We split Chennai into small hexagons of about 0.7 km² each. An area's picture counts what's within the reach shown for that business, not only inside the hexagon. It's an area to look in, not an address: the exact spot still needs a visit.
- Where does your data come from?
- Businesses from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps, and residents from WorldPop (2020). Map data always misses some businesses, so every count is "at least". The paid report adds a live look at the listings Google shows today.
- Does this tell me the rent?
- No. Rent, frontage and parking need a visit. That's why every guide ends with what to check on the ground.
